Ontario has pristine wilderness of international acclaim north of the Canada - US border, providing a canoeing paradise of millions of acres. Travel with us through a tangled network of lakes that once formed water routes traveled by Ojibwa & fur traders. Travel with us to the destination of experienced canoeists, seeking solitude & rare glimpses of wildlife by cascading waterfalls, glassy lakes & endless forests. Traverse lakes & rivers linked by portages averaging 400 meters. The canoeist stands an excellent chance of seeing moose, beaver, otter, marten & the bald eagle. There are red squirrels, chipmunks, beaver & mink as well.

Here's the overview. Six days & five nights on the water. Your job: negotiate with a crew of eight about what, where, why & how. Your choice: trekking, 50-miler, fishing, dorking, photography & watercolor, simple good food.  We’ll pick & pack our food & gear, renting only boats & what gear is needed. Be part of the planning:  Dates (dates different than D-Bar-A or Falling Rock) and destination are part of the planning: Algonquin or Temagami or Quetico, based partly on travel timetable, partly on what, why, how. Maximum crew size: Eight, with up to four adults. Parent-&-son or solo Scouts may be in a crew; otherwise, adults must be matched with a Scout. Two to a boat. Formation of a second and subsequent crew will require an additional six to eight crew members. You have to qualify. Only registered Scouts with BSA 365. You will need a passport: apply for it now if you don’t have one. Mandatory completion of a Simon Kenton Council Canoe Clinic; Type III physical; 1st class; making three planning meetings; completing a crew shakedown. Your 1st deposit, $100, is due by January 1, & holds your space. After January 1, the deposit increases to $150. Your second $100 or $150 deposit is due by February 1, 2008, a share of the planned per-person cost for each person. Sign-ups afterward February 1 can expect to pay a premium price, based on requirements of additional gear. Your third deposit is due March 1, 2008, nonrefundable (but transferrable if you secure someone to take your place – Scout, but adult if ratios allow). Money? We expect the trek will cost between $300 & $600, depending on choices we make.
